Yesterday I've made a new installation for the Ubuntu 10.10.
After that i start to install Campcaster Studio exactly like the Floss Manual explain.
The PC is a i386 system - pentium 4 2000 with 512 RAM
After a few dificulties I've made the installation using the synaptics mode and when I use the console to start Campcaster- Studio I receive the message that
Scheduller-server is not available and after i press ok the program seems to start
but on the console i see this:
arcomedia@arcomedia:~/media$ campcaster-studio
Campcaster-Studio 1.4.0

using configuration file: /etc/campcaster-studio.xml

and than i can't use part of the program, cause i can't see audio files to work with.
The forthcoming 1.4.1 packages will be for Lucid LTS, as this is mainly
a server-side application.

Use:
sudo /etc/init.d/campcaster-station start
to start the scheduler.

These libglade errors are a known bug, they don't stop the program from
working though.

Ubuntu 10.10 is not officially supported, as Sourcefabric mostly makes
server-side software, and if you are set on running Ubuntu, you are much
better off using an LTS (long term support) version on a server (i.e.
10.04 Lucid for now).
> I read somewhere that is coming the Campcaster 1.6 - It's true?
Yes! The release candidate is due next week, and the actual release at
the end of this month.
> Does it
> work better with 10.04
It has several major improvements over Campcaster 1.4.1. I would
definitely recommend starting with 1.6 for a production deployment,
because all the active development is taking place on the 1.6 branch now.
> A friend told me that is coming soon the Ubuntu 11.04 (or similar)
That's right, due in April, but that's not an LTS release either.
> My problem is: I want to have 10 computers in diferent places playing a

Yes, you could admin them all remotely using the web interfaces. It
sounds like a lot of work though! Could you explain a little more about
your proposed setup?
We have a Project running with Ubuntu 9.04, Wine and Zararádio (a free automation windows software). It is installed on 10 PC and is working fine. Each PC is working in a different shop and everything is inside our VPN (10.x.x.x) We access each one using VNC and the IP address. We are using mp3 files for music and pre recorded jingles. We use the music files in a rotation mode (all the files in a playlist called “something.rot” and this is our unique playlist. Than we have a scheduling option where we program the jingles to pass from date X to Y. Each scheduling have a different name: Shop A, Shop B, etc, and each shop play only a specific scheduling.
But Ubuntu 9.04 don’t have more support.
Our main server was upgraded and we need to upgrade the Ubuntu for a new OS. There is communication problems on both OS.
When we make the new installation of 10.04, Zararádio works only for a few minutes and stops with errors. We can’t get help from the people who have made Zararádio because on windows works perfect. (I use this software on other windows equipment for 5 years without complain). They don’t care about LINUX.
Now we decide to look for a substitute, and there are only two options and one is Campcaster. I hope I can use this software to do the same things. What do you think about it? Can I do equal?

Does your scheduler generate a new playlist with the current set of
jingles for that date range automatically?

Possibly this is caused by the version of WINE you are using, rather
than the new Ubuntu distro. Have you filed a bug against the WINE
package in Ubuntu or upstream?
> What do you think about it? Can I do equal?
Yes, I think this is possible without using WINE. Even if you can't make
Campcaster do this, there are other potential solutions on GNU/Linux,
which will probably be more robust in the long term than using a Windows
app.
Ø Does the playlist run at a specific time, or does it loop endlessly?
The software I describe have an option that we can “START” at 07:00 (Ex.) and we can “STOP” at 23:00 (Ex. Or other time). There are a PLAYLIST (SOMETHING.PLS) and inside we have the 2 files called “SOMETHING.ROT” (it must be two – if there are only one doesn’t work). And there are other field where we insert the option “RANDOM” or “REPEAT” or others. I use REPEAT and then it repeats the SOMETHING.ROT endless or until arrive the hour to STOP.
Ø Does your scheduler generate a new playlist with the current set of
jingles for that date range automatically?
I have to create the playlist like I explain upper. The program are in a file called SOMETHING.EVT. On this part I have the Jingles, ID’s, etc and the Playlist everyone to play Hourly (__:03:00 – this mean every minute 3 all the hours)
If you have any PC with Windows you can try the software. It’s very easy to understand.
Ø Possibly this is caused by the version of WINE you are using, rather than the new Ubuntu distro. Have you filed a bug against the WINE package in Ubuntu or upstream?
I try everything with WINE – Newest and older software – it still stops working. Someone told me that could be the way of new distro works. Many windows applications stops working correctly with Ubuntu 10.x

Watch out for the 1.6 release, it's coming soon!
My question is if the Campcaster can do the someway of work . I saw there are a scheduling option, but don’t try yet. But the rotation could be a better option. I Can create 3 or 4 rotation files. Insert on each one a hundred files and make a playlist with them and leave this all day working.
This software use the rotation on a good way: each time it read the rotation file, it plays the next song – (next song inside the rotation file) this mean it is making a “random” playlist – never repeat the same order.
I go to install the 10.04 LTS and wait for the 1.6 and then see what’s happening.

I don't think this is possible with Airtime (the successor to Campcaster
yet). There is the idea to implement a similar feature, for example to
fill 'dead air' spaces in a radio schedule, such as in the middle of the
night.
Airtime uses Liquidsoap for playout, but you might be able to achieve
your aim by writing a script for Liquidsoap directly. See for example:
