    Hi John,

    I'm sorry that upgrading to 2.5 has been a frustrating experience for you. I'm having trouble finding the thread where you mentioned Airtime may have "trashed" your raid array. Can you post the link? We QA test the upgrade procedure on many different distributions and it's unsettling to hear that something may have slipped through our testing.

    We're working on steering Airtime development towards solving many of the longstanding bugs that you're referring to as well as implementing much needed missing features like fallback playlists. However, many of these bugs require significant architecture work to be done first (otherwise they would have been done earlier). I recognize that many sensible requests from users like yourself may not have been heeded in the past, but as the new lead developer of Airtime, I can assure you we're listening now.

    That said, things will still take time to sort out and to stabilize, and in the mean time, we appreciate your patience and continuing cooperation in working with us to troubleshoot Airtime bugs. We hope to have a development roadmap posted soon, and I'm looking forward to hearing your thoughts on that.

    These forums are great,  the project is great, product has come a long way since we started using in 2011.

    But the proper place for documenting issues is "only" in the bug tracker, it will get lost in any forum.

    I submitted a bug in tracker last month,  documented exactly how to reproduce it, Cliff, Lisa and team fixed it and released a patch in github in 4 hours for me to use in production.  

    That's great response for a free open source project the has just a few developers.

    The question is? Has the project grown so community members are marshaling bugs, and committing patches like some of the more successful open source projects. That is truly the only way to accelerate the features and quality other than funding some more headcount for the core team.

    Keep up the good work.

    The best thing we can do is to report all issues in bug tracker, detail best how to reproduce, and to fix the ones we are capable of submitting back when possible.

    I will be going out on a limb here because I think this complaint lack the following tenents and merits of computing

    1.Limited Knowledge of What is open source
    2. Understanding of what seems vision of the developers and where Airtime is coming from with Liquidsoap as its core

    3. System design and analysis

    4. Get ready for this! There seems to be some to be some indication of indolence

    What is open source

    Open source requires you to take what is there and fixed it to your best solution.It offers you to be more flexible approach than any proprietary solution.and then to share that solution

    Where you are unable to make these changes you acquire the service of an expertise for either volunteer or hire.
    What I hope Airtime will do is something similar to Roku and keep a list of recommended expertise on the forum for hire.
    In my early days as a channel developer,This was posted and people who contact various person to customized the software for them
    No Software will ever meet everyone's expectation.
    No individual can make be that one person that is why there are broadcast engineer,computer specialist,programmers,designers etc.

    Understanding of what seems vision of the developers and where Airtime is coming from with Liquidsoap as its core

    I see the understanding of the earlier developers in that if you just empty any fallback playlist folder,liquidsoap crashes
    Liquidsoap manual warn you of some thing that will crash your system
    I have know people who used Zaroradio,Sams etc and when these crashes you are at a lost
    The developers in my opinion compensate for a number of things and the environment they are in.
    Some station actually signed off the air and this sees a feasible solution when nothing is schedule
    If you program your system you should no longer have dead Air

    here is a simple solution I implement with no Fall back

    I did a 24hr show 0000 today  to 0000 tommorrow
    Repeat it without end
    For all days 
    make it a linked show


    That is basically the essence of any scheduler in a stion cartwheel
    Projected time 2-10 minutes Duties of station Manager or producer

    Now create the various playlist,smart blocks,webstreams etc
    put them in the days you want
    The first 7days and they are linked so it will follows

    This is the essence of Programming
    Projected time 5-various minutes Duties of program Manager or producer

    Bam you are safe.

    Now tell me which software you can use without programming it.

    I once ask the question of playlist folder and the excellent person tell me thats not in Airtime.

    Since I organised my music either by artist ,album,or Genre. not by arbituray name I just never replied
    Organised your stuff and you are good to go

    If you even make the best fall back folder if there are malformed url,permissions problem,missing file
    You will have problem,

    I spell out a number of fall back solution recently in the name of open source use one

    always remember this Mnemonic

    If it aint broken do not fixed it.

    If you do not have a testing environment,you should be cautious of upgrades.

    many routers will say do not upgrade if you are not having problem
    People have not learn from Windows ME,when there is a rush to get to the market it flop.

    By the way why are putting a raid system on your Airtime?

    Clearly you have no system strategy?

    All you have to do is import what ever you need for the shows ?
    This is like the old days go to the library take what you want and return them when finished
    Thats how your music library should be

    You way is whacky, I wonder how fast your now playing operates.

    I took a dive into 2.5 implement my fallback scripts and within 2 days my system went dead in the mid of the night.
    Oh so what was wrong

    Airtime implements 2.5.02 when I did so upgrade which is done monthly it pick up the new upgrade and change even icecast.

    So what I did not do.

    Have only security updates and upgrades turn on only and put versions on hold  for 2.5 

    All features upgrade are not necessarily for you which have an working system
    If you have every been an administrator you will know this and so you would have tested your system before any upgrade.

    Finally you need either to have different approach where you can research the changes,have programming done by someone else,and managing by another
    but employ some delegation of duties else you will seem like employing some form of indolence

    Around my Area there was a historic house which fire gutted by about 65% some two Years Ago.These Guys restore it even more beautiful.

    I looked at the number of new things is the lib files (videos,etc) and I think we are getting "lost in expectation".Moving from our core

    I initially started with rivendell,i moved to Airtime and used the number of solution of butt,mixxx and virtualised m3w.

    Now I used Only Airtime and Rivendell Now for the Last Two Months.

    I was fascinated last week when I realized I could run multiple station from just these two software.

    Please focus on one thing and used the others as AddOn unless you are doomed to failure

    Hi John !

    As all open source project, you need knowledge to install it.
    Why ?

    Because is running under Gnu/Linux (and is not for all of you a known system)
    Because you need to be familiar with LAPP (Linux Apache Postgresql Php)
    Because you need to be familiar with networks configurations

    Etc.

    But you have not all false ;-)

    - background playlist is not yet here
    - jingles insertion in playlists (and background playlist) is not here too
    - etc

    I'm thinking Airtime is not responsible about your raid crash, but perhaps one of its dependencies (it's a conjecture) or libraries (monit or python libraries perhaps)
    But that's really strange, I've never see that before...

    what sort of software raid do you use ?

    Like I said,there are best practice and there is use practice.

    If you are developing a production system you should not put systems and application on your media storage.
    Ever Noob should start by having 

    1.Media Storage - ( NAS,Freenas,Open Media Vault,Drobo etc.)
    2.Firewall (Router,Dedicated Firewall)
    3.Web server
    4.Application and Systems

    It is Cheap,irresponsible to Have All this on One. If your system is compromise,your Goose is cook

    If its just your test system,then goahead,If its your production please do a best practice system.

    Its the first rule of Security,delegating roles.


    I read that Albert Santoni is from MIXXX
    Every version before 1.0 was feed with criticism
    MIXXX started to Earn its recognition after 0.9 before that Mixxx even use to Crash on me when I was doing a live set.

    I remember one day on 0.9 it ran 4hours without a skip while Djs with cracked version of Virtual Dj 5.0
    had to have me fading and filling for them. As I said you worked out the Kinks.

    The hacks and work around here are what is known as "stop Gaps"

    The coding  requires three main language

    1.  PHP                for the interface
    2.  Postgresql       for The storage of Media
    3. Pyhon              For interaction with
    4. Liquidsoap       For processing
    If the hacks does not have all these then believe me your modification is limited.

    I will post how I modified my Interface for this weekend to show I made it more UAL (User Acceptable Level)

    As I posted before,it take simple things to trigger a liquidsoap crash.Just empty or delete any folder and You have a crash.

    I would rather Airtime team takes it time than give me a half bake solution.

    In the Meantime I hope Daniel and The team will test some of the script and make suggestions that people can use these work around at their own risk.

    Just like PPA's Under ubuntu and what is called "MODS" UNDER MANY OTHERS.

    Just a quick question, is there a problem with Airtime using a RAID array for storage when doing an upgrade? I have a RAID 5 system I'm trying to migrate to from the /srv/airtime location.  If I did the migration would there be a problem after an upgrade?

    Sorry if I missed the boat on this but I was about to start using the RAID.

    I get it now.  So it was a Linux update that did this not the Airtime upgrade.  Good to know.

    Which Linux distribution are you using, John? It's weird that you had to install a new version of GRUB to update your Airtime-related packages. If your Linux distro wants to upgrade and overwrite GRUB during the upgrade of an unrelated package, I'm afraid there's not much we can do about that.

    I appreciate both your criticism and the support from others here in this thread. We really are trying our best, but as others have pointed out, there's perhaps some extra precautions you can take when running Airtime (or upgrading) it on a production system. (I'll leave that to Voisses...)

    I do not want anybody to think that Airtime Teams are not Listening
    as I said I used Free Open source extensively and Airtime surpass a lot.

    I do not use Cable TV ( do not have the time for TV ) but I sometime Watch movies etc. and lookat the many mods. for Xbmc

    Let me say I would like to just sit by computer an say " create a playlist with so and so " and its granted,but i know its little remote now.What I have achieve is to say monday the temperature is so,tuesday its so and it create it,then play it at specified time.If you listen caribbean experience,I have that effect at 15,25 and 55 minutes past the hour testing now.

    I would never ask airtime to do that although this condition is available on my phone and I see so much people want that.

    In the Same breath I want anybody who comes to this forum can see there are alternatives (MODS) to almost all the problems we are having.

    So lets "Praise the Team in Public and Really Whip them in Private"

    Hi Voisses !

    I understand what you said, but not be agree with you ;-)
    That's sure we can do a lot of things with airtime, but not all users are like you and me : geek :D
    I think, the demands asked are not to be "rude" with the team, but instead to be more specifics on the features asked by the users

    don't forget, all users are not geeks, the need a usable solution, not a proof of concept (airtime is not that, we're agree on that too, but you see the idea)

    I'm working with Airtime since two years now, and I love it (and the team too :D
    But when you love something, you must talk about needs :D

    This is far from the truth that there is no resolution for most of the post.

    Between Hoerich,You ,the sourcefabric team and myself post solutions from fallback,widgets and players,installation,remote connection,connection with encoders(MIXXX,TRAKTOR etc.) and we work tireless to make sure the persons say I get it or thanks.

    I would expect the person who install Airtime would have a basic knowledge of linux  or can type sudo.

    I wrote all my tutorial with that in mind.

    I would expect  users of Airtime are the Management and Staff of the radio station,I do not expect the person who have no knowledge of linux to come for solution here.

    I have worked with one person who PM me about assistance who asked me "will the fallback fail at next upgrade",the next day Airtime push a upgrade moving from 2.5.0 to 2.5.0-2 destroying my fallback also.

    I spent almost a week coming with a solution that I would not have to redo All I have to next time.
    I then post back to the person that I have a solution and will do this for them.

    I have Used Sams Broadcaster -They use Pal 

    Rivendell use RML Broadcaster

    Many others broadcasting software have add-on shedulers from third party and themselves etc,which expect you to have some knowledge beyond basic computing to maximise.

    I recently volunteered with a station which goes off air when no-one is in the studio,or nothing is programmed so for them Airtime is very much suitable as it is today

    The Greatest Thing about Open Source is that there is "no one size fit all solution"
    You can Use it,abuse it or refuse it

    My house has 4 Raspbmc powered from both a Backend and Front-End Server Mythbuntu to serve media at my home

    Its not that I am a geek, but I go to their forum looking for the solutions there not missing features.
    I do not think the average person who comes here looking for feature request and not done.

    If you bought a new computer All its capable of is maybe to show you the internet.If you need spreadsheet,word,etc you have to install it.Some people can but my mom will never be able.

    I never scold kids in the public,when I am home they really get it.

    So I have there input and they have mine and therefore communication is tops because they know what I like.

    I have seen people pushing their own agenda in this forum,saying things like forget Airtime etc.

    My Agenda is to be part of the solution and not see just the problem.

    Airtime have a request featured section,I rarely even go there,If I want to trash someone I would go there because thats where the developers are.

    Not that I am running anyone from the forum,but when I come here I come for solution,not to see that request are not fullfil.

    I Have used Rivendell for Years,I never encourage or discourage anyone about it

    My friend used Itunes for playout to his transmitter and an encoder and when he hears my Airtime,he wants it but at times he says he just comfortable but wants more .

    So here is my Final Say,If you want more then it requires more and as @John Chewter implies that surely he could do better,then bring that and his best here to Airtime,Its needed.

    And so I rest my case ,until a next person comes here trashing Airtime be forewarned

    Being sick for a while, seems like I missed something.
    I can't understand the riot.
    But I'm glad for being very experienced in working with contesting people ;-)

    I'm really sad to hear John is going to leave the forum.
    But to clarify, VOISSES' voice is not Airtime's voice! It's a heavy-users voice!
    And I would not leave a project because of one voice!

    We should all be aware of how we talk to each other. On how we answer questions.
    Some have talent to cause more cunfusion when answering, instead of going right for the topic.

    But this is still a user-forum!
    I hope the new mailing-list is an alternative for users like John.
