SOLVED! PLEASE HELP!! URGENT HELP IN SETTING EITHER BUTT OR MIXXX!!
  • Hello everyone

I am totally new to all this (Internet radio) and although I have zero knowledge about it, I committed to set up a talk radio for an online school.

I found a post in this forum from a person call Ed Pressman...basically his post almost described my situation. Here it is:
    1. The
station will focus on "live" shows with anywhere from 1 up to 3 or 4
"hosts". When there is more than 1 host it is likely that the hosts will
be spread around the globe. Skype or another VOIP service would likely
be the preferred method of connecting multiple hosts into the show.
    2. Hosts
will have pre-defined "shows" and timeslots. When 1 host hands over to
the next host, I want them to be able to talk to one another live on air
as part of the "handover" process and to create continuity.
    3. Typical
format for a show would be 2 hours where the first hour has a guest
being interviewed by the host (or hosts) and then in the second hour we
would take calls in from listeners which would go out live on air.
    4. We
would/could provide a Skype ID for listeners to call in on. We would
also provide multiple call in telephone numbers (ie a US number, a UK
number and Canadian number etc etc) and receive those calls in on a
laptop etc running a softphone app.
    5. Each
primary show host would need a decent mic and a simple mixer to take in
the calls. An example of how this could be done is shown here:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6JHuf2TKKJg   Is this workable with Airtime and if so, how would Mixxx be used to handle the input from the physical mixer?
    6. I
have Mixxx down as it runs on Windows, Mac and Linux. So my thought was
that each host would install Mixxx on their local pc and then use that
to connect to their Airtime slot, with Airtime running on the streaming
Icecast server. Basically I need to provide a host with a basic
blueprint of the kit they need to make it work.
    7. I
will need detailed listener stats and the means to run scheduled ad
breaks during live programmes - hosts will therefore need some kind of
alert (could be ad break music fading in slowly for example) so that
they can move from the interview to the ad break in a controlled manner.
    8. I also want to send the station to tunein.com so as to get listed/featured on their mobile app player etc.

    Hi Ruth,

Were you able to get the dll file in the right place? Your post is a little hard to follow because it looks like you copy/pasted the other post 4 times. What error are you getting from Mixxx?

    1. be more clear, do you want interaction or only streaming ?
    2. not really clear, be more explicit
    3. not concern airtime
    4. idem 3
    5. idem 4
    6. Mixxx is for DJiing and Butt for streaming live without human interactions
    7. integrated into airtime web interface
    8. tunein is a directory where you need to be registred
  • Hi Josh! You were the last person I was expecting to answer here in the forum. Thanks for all your kind help with my issues with Airtime and Mixxx.

I haven't resolve the problem. I can't connect Mixxx with Airtime.

I may have not place the LAME file  in the correct folder.

    Ruth
  • Albert, thanks for taking the time to highlight some points about my post.

What I want to achieve is a radio station capable of streaming music that it can be interrupted to make LIVE broadcasting. And whilst I do, I can interview live any person around the world using either Skype or any other system that maybe is still unknown to me but I want to find if such system exist!

I was told here, by someone in Sourcefrabic that either Mixxx or Butt can do that for me, in other words, that either programs can broadcast me live whilst enabling me to receive live calls.

    I am now very confuse.

And yes, I am very new to this and I am not finding  easy.

    Best wishes

    Ruth

your problematic is not with airtime
and airtime can't do coffee too ;-)

    airtime is an automation system
you can use it for live session too (it's the thing interressing for you)

but you also need materials (mic, mix table, computers)

    for example :
you interview someone (live session in airtime)
but you need a computer/ phoning system with skype/hangout/etc who send stream to airtime
  • Thanks Albert

But can Mixxx or Butt be  used for that purpose or not?

    This is so confusing.

I have done tons of Internet search regarding online platforms capable of providing an efficient system for a Talk Radio solution, and so far the only one out there is BlogTalRadio which I find too expensive.

I thought that with today's technology someone outt here would have come with a similar or even better solution in regard to Talk Radio shows :-(

  • Ruth Hi
Here is the instructions for Mixxx         http://mixxx.org/wiki/doku.php/internet_broadcasting.

Please note You might want to uninstall your MIXXX and restart these steps

On windows there is Three Things you will have to note

    1. When you are going to download Mixxx  I would recommend that you chose the "Download it" tab on the MIXXX page I have found that with windows 7 home premium when you chose the download button it sometimes give you the 32bit software even though you have a 64bit machine. Chose the correct version on the download it page[properties of My Computer will give you your machine specs.
    2. When you download the file and installing it make sure you chose "Everyone on This computer".If you do not chose this option especially on windows vista and Greater the installation files will load into the user Account (/app/localroaming/) instead of programfilesX86
    3. You Need to have the appropriate lame file,Lame files are found in audacity and other audio software programs this will not work for MIXXX  follow the instructions for windows on the page  http://mixxx.org/wiki/doku.php/internet_broadcasting..Then after you unzip and rename the lame file copy it into the programfileX86/mixxx

If you do not follow the above MIXXX will continue to give you an error about not connecting to the server

If you did it correct it will say cannot authenticate, that implies you just need to enter in information for the Live broadcast preference

Here is what you need to Know .

    Stream Settings in Airtime

    • (a) decide whether you want to connect by Show, Master or both in Airtime. (b) Then go to input settings on the stream tab in Airtime,(c) Set up a mount point, port, source as the Username and password  for master (do not use information from your icecast settings, use new ones) and (d) a different mount point and port for show
    • If done right you should see a connection url
The difference is that for Show you will have to set up a schedule in the calender for authentication and that is why a username and password is not required in stream settings  while the master can connect anytime and override your schedule which may not be desirable.
For Me All my shows schedule in the calendar I put a custom authentication with source as the username and [mypass] as the password. and also airtime authentication see here for more instructions for how to setup your calendar (cartwheel) in my post here http://forum.sourcefabric.org/discussion/15583/line-in-as-a-live-source

MIXXX or BUTT or m3w (encoders/streamers) setup

    • For test I would use the  Master connection information. You should now take that information above and put it in MIXXX or BUTT or m3w (encoders/streamers)
    • You can enter the host as either a host name or an IP address of the server (in airtime you find that under the stream tab. Use  host name if your airtime is on the same machine as encoder streamer or you have a good DNS Server .I recommend using the IP addresses. This help if you pull up the listen tab in airtime on another Machine.
    • In the
“login” field, the default is to enter “source” – without this, you will
not connect successfully to the server.
    • enter your mount point - the other information are optional, put some audio on but you should now be able to connect and heard that audio following the procedure to start the relevant ( encoders/streamers).Happy Streaming!

let me know if this help and I look forward for you writing your final set up here http://forum.sourcefabric.org/discussion/15584/here-is-my-setupwhat-is-your-setup-and-how-can-i-improve-mine

Recommendation (Applicable to My setup you can do what suit you)

    • Do not use the Master for Day to day DJs - Use Master for Studio (I am using Rivendell some of my friends use SAMs,Itunes,Winamp etc,I am not endorsing any use the one you love or comfortable with at the studio) and DJs in Your calendar for times allocated
    • Setup at least two 12hr. NIght and Day That way you can put in SHOW input and Authentication
    • You Just need to do this Once and check the repeat button in the create show settings. If later you want you can modify any day.
    • Its best to use Source as the username for Master and Custom SHOW Connection to Streamers and Encoders (like BUTT) which  do not ask for username (source is default settings in the program)
    • Remember as long as you are on the same LAN your ports should be fine if you are behind a router(NAT) on your LAN then you might need to forward ports. Please note that I am not speaking about the router between the internet(WAN) and  Local Area Network LAN.
With this set up you can control who gets to be on the air. is a dj need to be kick while a show is on just tap the SHOW Button and you are back to schedule or Master

  • Okay So let me also attempt take your points one by one.

(1). -  (5). This is best done by some hang-out sessions (video) or conference calling (audio),You cannot pipe 2 or more streams to your location and send back feed to them all.Its confusing and full of feed back.I attemped this with multiple instance of VLC as a cheap solution and it had me covering my Ears.Example here ,They are doing it the way you suggest.

(6). Search for Podcast Kits.I buy my equipment from a supplier who give me good advise, warranty ,ability to return if I do not like it and who chose to like to make sure I am satisfy.

(7). Airtime Give Good Stats (using Monit) under Systems

    (8) Unless your Internet provider provides open ports on their cable modem/Router ,You might have to have a knowledge  of port forwarding or Dynamic DNS to send the feed to TuneIn and Others.
I chose a cheap stream provider who give me relaying backup etc.It takes the load off my feed my local internet.Airtime Pro  provide such a resources contact them

  • Hi Voicess...many thanks for the information. I do appreciated. I will have a go, so finger crossed

    Ruth
  • I can't..I just cant do it!!!

I did everything  advised and nothing..such despair :-(
  • I am at a lost as to where you are having problem.
I think you might be having problems not related to airtime.
I can therefore recommend that you refer to the relevant forums who will better be able to assist you with installation etc. as follows:-

     BUTT      http://sourceforge.net/p/butt/discussion/738037
    MIXXX     http://www.mixxx.org/forums

In good faith you can make a written step by step of what you are doing match it against what I outlined.

Where you have difficulty you could post it here including the Operating Systems,The Errors and other relevant information.

Please Refrain From double posting  the same thread or problem in different posts. You will get Little attention that way.Best you use one Thread posting until its solved.
