BEGINNER QUESTIONS PRE-INSTALLATION
  • Hello all,

I am a complete beginner at all of this, so I'm trying to make sense of the manual and requirements listed.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you in advance!

The basics of what we want:

    - we want a simple internet radio station, streaming live from our website
    - we want to have a mix of looped audio from the library, and live shows
    - we want to be able to record the live shows

    1. We're going to be installing this on a VPS.  Reading the manual, I'm confused about the role icecast plays in all of this.  If we want to do internet-only radio, do we need an icecast install (the manual says: in theory you could stream from Liquidsoap to any online service)?

    2. If we do need icecast, can it be installed on the same server airtime is on?  Or does there need to be a separate icecast streaming server?

    3. We're going to have hosts do live shows from their own home studios.  In order to both stream and record these shows, I understand that a sound card is required.  But it seems in the manual that it only talks about using one sound card, as in the scenario of having one studio for the entire station.  Is it possible to let remote hosts broadcast and record live shows through airtime?  Is it done using a web stream? If so, how?

    4. We might decide to have someone else install the entire system if I can't figure it out myself (I'm a techie, but not in this field).  Any recommendations where I could find a freelancer with experience with airtime?

I know these are a lot of questions... but thank you in advance for your help!

    Hi Mitch,

    1. & 2. In default installation, Icecast is installed on the same server as Airtime. But it can also be installed on a different server. http://en.flossmanuals.net/airtime-en-2-3/preparing-the-server/ http://en.flossmanuals.net/airtime-en-2-3/automated-installation/

    3. Live-Shows can be realized via Line-In locally or via stream remotely.
The Live-Shows cannot be recorded yet, but this should be implemented in v2.5.
If you want to connect remotely to Airtime, follow this instructions http://en.flossmanuals.net/airtime-en-2-3/live-shows-with-mixxx/

    4. The installation of Airtime works like a charm. Just follow the instructions of flossmanuals http://en.flossmanuals.net/airtime-en-2-3/automated-installation/
If you need further support, you should go for an Airtime-Pro-Account http://www.sourcefabric.org/en/airtime/airtimepro/
I'm a IT-Expert on Windows, Specialist on Mac, but Newbie on Linux and I did also make it.
Configuring the Soundcard for multiple Line-Ins could be tricky, but is not necessary before v2.5.

  • I concur with Hoerich, it's pretty easy to install. I have NO tech skills and have Airtime up and running on a VPS with the ability to connect and do live shows. I suggest for recording you use software to stream that has a built in recording feature. I use BUTT whch is free. SAM broadcaster also has this ability.
