I'm an extreme Ubuntu/Linux newbie. So, please, go easy on me.
I want to convert a Apple G5 PowerMac into a Ubuntu machine. I have a few questions. First, do I have to run the server version of Ubuntu on my PPC? Yes, I want to serve music on the new machine using Airtime. But, can one do this through the desktop version? Or, does it _have_ to be a server version of the OS?
However since you're using the PPC architecture there will be a small problem during install which you will need to take special steps to avoid. Come back here with the results of "lsb_release -a" (type this into the Ubuntu terminal) and I can point out the steps required.
In the current version of Airtime (2.1.3), you will need to do some manual tweaking to get Airtime running on PPC. In an upcoming patch this will be much easier (2.1.4).
I tried this with 2.3 and unsurprisingly didn't work - and wasn't really sure how to install anyway (tried the full install script - which of course can't find PPC in the repository, so fails...)
Are there any instructions for compiling or installing 2.3 on PPC?
