Is there any way to setup BookType in a shared hosting environment (1and1.com)?

It is not possible to install it on a shared hosting environment. You must have a dedicated or virtual server to run it.

Are there any other solutions that CAN be installed in a shared hosting environment? I have a project I want to launch and really desire the group-sourcing design and publishing capabilities...

Just a thought from the top of my head (didn't really check it) - isn't it enough to have a python virtual environment?
