I've followed the installation procedure and at the last step I get this error:
ERROR!
Unable to delete the file '/var/www/newscoop/themes/unassigned/set_the_new_custodian/404.tpl'.
This is on my local environment (since I got problems with installing ns on my shared hosting)
Ubuntu 12.04
PHP 5.3.6-13ubuntu3.6 with Suhosin-Patch (cli) (built: Feb 11 2012 02:17:16)
Mysql: Server version: 5.1.61-0ubuntu0.11.10.1
Probably there's something wrong with permissions I guess? The Newscoop folder is recursively chowned to www-data:www-data....

Ok, apparently some chown operations didn't get executed. My bad.
So now I get through the whole installation, but get a 404 when going to
http://localhost/newscoop/admin/index.php
Mod Rewrite is enabled

Yes, I was looking for that. However, it isn't there. There must have gone something wrong with permissions during the installation procedure.
I'm gonna rerun the whole process

Ok, redid the whole installation process. All requirements were met. Chowned everything recursively to www-data. No errors during installation. But same 404 error after installation when trying to go to
http://localhost/newscoop/admin/index.php
.htaccess is absent.

Fixed. Renamed a file called 'htaccess' to '.htaccess'
