I assume by downgrade, you mean simply sending the command:
WANT_AUTOMAKE="1.7"
along with your make statements... you shouldn't have to ACTUALLY
downgrade, should you?

I have good experience with freshrpms.net with yum and apt-get support
for handeling i386 platform rpm's. Freshrpms is oriented on redhat /
fedora but are there others good distribution networks?
