Hi all,
We seem to have reached a dead spot with the demo server requirements. As
Akos correctly has pointed out, we have tried to pin down the install
environment 6 weeks ago but got nowhere.
I have a theory about why this got nowhere before. The task falls between
the cracks: The developers aren't responsible for the hardware or OS,
Michal Hruska is responsible for the hardware but not the OS or the
components, and Michael Aschauer is responsible for the OS but not for the
components or hardware.
Hopefully we can all pull together to get this to work.
Ideally, the demo server environment would closely mirror that of the
Install CD, meaning it would have Knoppix installed, as well as all other
dependencies. We're downloading the Knoppix CeBIT edition that Michael
Aschauer pointed us to, and Michal Hruska will try to install it tomorrow.
There may be difficulties between Knoppix and VMware, but we won't know
about that until tomorrow.
Here's where you can help:
- Akos, can we get a list of hardware requirements (recommended RAM,
recommended disk size, CPU, sound card, etc.)? If ls-dev runs on the
Mandrake 10.2-powered virtual server under VMware, do you think Knoppix
will have problems?
- Michael, can you check the LS components against the supported Knoppix
list? For example, apparently the CeBIT edition doesn't have full ALSA
support, but this is something that Michael believes he can fix.
- Once we get Knoppix installed somewhere, then Michael can install the
correct tweaks to the Knoppix install.
- Akos has assigned himself the task of creating the tarball for
installation. Does this the dependencies for the PHP-based components like
StorageServer and Alib? What about big dependencies like Postgres?
The upside of this is that if it works, not only will we have a working
demo version, but we will also have a good testbed for the Install CD.

BTW: please use boot-options to more closely match our intended default
behaviour for the knoppix install: 1) "alsa" (although this will leave
the sound unconfigured for now) 2) lang=us (the cebit release defaults
to german language and keyboard, I guess we don't want that)
..

a recommended system requirement would look something like the following:
- 512MB RAM
- 1GB HDD + the disk space you want for the audio files
- any decent processor (say 1GHz and up)
- any sound card having a proper ALSA (or OSS) driver
as for Knoppix vs. VMWare - Michal would know better, as I usually
install my Windows on VMWare only but from past experiences (having
installed SUN Solaris x86 on VMWare, which is totally unsupported), I'd
say that since we won't run X Windows on the system, it should be fine..
the biggest issue will be the sound card though - how to route the sound
out of the VM unto the real soundcard of the system.

PHP - yes.
postgres and others - of course not.

unfortunately the scheduler won't run without having a sound card driver
(either OSS or ALSA) available...

yes of course this means to install and configure alsa - as other ls
requirements not yet in knoppix ....
