summercamp in prague is happening as we speak. as i mail quite a number
of people, quite a number of euphoric statements. but - of course - you
will only see the criticism...
these are the feature requests from the projects at summercamp:
- search engine (inhouse or tweaked existing, but needs a new search engine)
- web log analyzer. advertisers need it. independent publications need
(suggestion: developers, take a look at www.phpopentracker.net )
- templates edited by different people in different editors might not
display because of different language sets
- topics: should have some kind of categorical tree structure. and some
weight. for further information on the topics vision, please contact braja
from transitions online directly. important: one item can be linked to
different topics and the template decision to display either or needs to be
resolved by weights.
- database abtraction: should be used with PostgresQL, too

- log analyzer. management needs to make decisions based on readership.
- search also, braja said everything.
- unnecessary clicks - navigation is not good.
- user interface with top menu and pulldown menu (like mambo)
- priorities of buttons: publish and *glossary* are next to each other. why???
- place text anywhere in the article, on the site. don't know how this can
be solved, but its an editor request.
- including multimedia inside the articles, or attach them to articles
- limit number of characters in every field in the edit article (article
body and simple text line) (question: because of unicode one character on
the screen takes up more space in unicode)
- user comments for articles (possibly using the existing forum software)
- bookmarks: short URL for the sites
- variables for the database set in the admin interface (like flags "show
on front page")
- complex archive/search: for example: sort by authors and find articles
that way.
- variables in the template: counting articles in one publication, and in
another
- structure of publication: radio stations, magazines, etc. they don't need
sections. or they don't need issues. maybe the solution could be to have
some default structure which can be chosen or it can be altered to fit needs.
- dynamic and static part: every day new hours, but also packages produced
weekly. problem one: "new issue" makes the templating difficult. "different
publication" makes the search impossible
- user rights need to be limited also to the structure of the publication
(like issue / section, etc.)
- campfire and arabic has trouble: sometimes it becomes bold and java does
not display this. there is nothing to be done but deleting the entire article.
- campfire starts not smoothly. crashes many times. it is a software issue
(locale?) it was tried on many machines.
- user rights need to be better structured (see also zoran). and more
granular (more rights)
- some features need to be hidden (example: if no right to *publish*
article, don't show it in *submit*)
- problem with archive: if adding back archives, allow these to be *older*
when listing articles as well
- images: searching images is needed
- images: in campfire images can be browsed, added and inserted directly
- image archive needs to be sorted, make folders, move them etc.
- image thumbnails for inside the articles (possibly easier once we are
using smarty ?)
- image caption: the caption can not be controlled easily (has fixed name
inside style sheet)
- control size of search box in form field
- workaround for click on search form button to get search results
(pressing enter does not work)
- search in arabic does not work ("we searched for mohammed, but found
nothing")
- multimedia management: more than one file per article
- unlock / lock articles: the ability to disable the lock / or to redefine
the functionality to make more sense ("really" lock)
- localization of admin interface: right to left, left to right does not
display in the admin interface
- preview hides frame with error for templates (only seen for user with
rights for managing templates)
- restrictions on size for media uploads: size and type
- /priv/ any way to change this for security purposes. possibly during
installation it can be changed?
- PDF files. can we add support for PDF files. uploading, archiving,
showing in articles
- fields in the article: limit to 100 which is not enough
- field names in article types: arabic (english only at the moment)
- archiving old HTML stuff: offline application to parse and insert into
database? can it be developed?
- offline interface for everything: add text, images, media -> then click,
connect and upload
content and media development http://mi.cz
