Re: [campsite-support] Custom Fields For Staff
  • Hi Lee,

We're glad to hear about your interest in Campsite. I've just returned from
a three-day development and documentation sprint on Campsite, and there's
definitely a lot that you can do with it. We're working right now on a set
of new sample templates that will hopefully illustrate some of its unique
features, as well as documentation that explains how to make those features
    work in real-life situations.

As for your question about fields, you can absolutely define your own
fields. In Campsite's terminology, these groupings of fields are called
Article Types, and you can add as many fields as you like. Then you can
call the fields from the template language.

The Campsite manual has more about article types. It's at this address:
    http://code.campware.org/manuals/campsite/3.2/index.php?id=197&lang=en-us

    Hope this helps,

I have been using Typo3 to run a magazine site for the past few years and
recently stumbled across Campfire. What intrigues me the most is the
ability to place data all over the page without having to stick to block
    formats.

I installed the software once (in a sub-directory) and it would not work.
Taking a look at the code, I see it must reside in the root directory, so
will install again once I move my Typo3 site to a sub-directory.

OK, to the point (sorry for rambling) ... Campfire looks really complete
but I would like to see a picture field and bio field for the journalist.
Is there a way to add custom fields to the staff database without hacking
    files?

Regardless, I am anxious to try Campfire.

  • Hi,

I just re-read your mail and saw that you weren't asking about article
types. One potential workaround may be to create a different publication,
and call it something like info.yoursite.com. There you can create article
types for your staff bios that are separate from your main content; you
could conceivably call fields from that publication in your main one.

    Anyone else have any ideas?

  • Hi!

I still understood Lee's idea differently:

There is an article with title, summary, article itself, author... and
he would like to have author's photo placed in the story itself and
also a nice little summary of the author, a bio field as he calls it.

Please Lee, correct if it was not understood by neither me or Douglas.

  • Yes G, you are correct.

The more I think about it (not using Campfire yet) would be to make a topic for each author and have the template set up with their photo and bio. Then, somehow link the author name on an article to a author template which would display his pic/bio, the current article and other articles written by him.

Is there already a link to list articles by author?

Hmmm, back to the manual to learn some more.
  • Create a separate publication (authors publication) and create an article
for each author (name, biography, picture - attach article image). Create
and assign a template to the author article in order to display the author
    info the way you want.

In the main publication add an article field - byauthor (NOT author) - of
type multiline text. In this field create an internal link to the author
article (from the authors publication). Display this field in the article
page to have a link to the author details.

Listing articles written by an author: see "List of
    Articles",
    look for author attribute.

  • Lee, your thinking is less of a hassle for day-to-day editing than the
solution proposed by Mugur, but it is more of a pain if regular users
(journalists) are not the ones who will be updating the photo and author
    bio.

I've included your suggestions in the wiki
    (http://code.campware.org/projects/campsite/wiki/AuthorStaticField) I've
created for specifying how we should be dealing with authors in Campsite.
If you have any other ideas, please let us know.

    All the best,

    Sava

  • Hi!

Did you also download the whole package again in your server?
Maybe there is some corrupted file due to ftp connection or similar
    issue.
    What others think?

So you do not get any installation first page either? Blank page with
    that text or how?

  • Finally got the installation to work after adjusting some permissions and modifying the one script as notated.

The other issue that took me a few minutes, and I blamed it on my being tired, was I don't believe during the install it tell you what your admin user name will be. (or did I miss that?) I knew my password, but had to guess at the user name. But like I said, I have started the install and hope to do more this evening.

And please don't get me wrong, I work for an IT department and am merely used to documenting any issues for those that follow.

You guys are doin a great job. Can't wait to get my site running.
