Has anybody had any success with a clean install of Ubuntu 16.04 and then installing the current version of Newscoop?

What issues do you have?

I managed to do it, but I had Ubuntu 14.04 before, I upgraded it to 16.04. (Ubuntu 16.04 comes with PHP 7 and Newscoop doesnt support it properly).

The solution is to downgrade your PHP version to 5.6 once you are on Ubuntu 16.04.

You can use ondrej PPA:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ondrej/php

and then you will be able to install php5.6

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install php5.6

and all its dependencies according to this doc: https://github.com/sourcefabric/Newscoop/blob/v4.4/newscoop/docs/INSTALL-ubuntu.md

Thanks for that. I am slowly trying to get Newscoop, Superdesk and Airtime running under 16.04 - as you say, php versions have proved to be an issue.

I finally got Newscoop installed on 14.04 after following the instructions at http://sourcefabric.booktype.pro/newscoop-44-for-journalists-and-editors/manual-installation/ from the download page. Even then I had to fiddle with permissions in mysql for it to work. There are still problems to resolve such as refusing to load themes and publications becoming uneditable.
