I've run into the same problem several times attempting to install Airtime on an Ubuntu Precise VPS.

The error occurs while installing Timidity++, though the reason given is "Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned error code (1)".

Problem solved.

Stopped using Ubuntu, and switched to Debian 7 which evidently has more granular error reporting.

UTF 8 encoding issue with the database.

That's working well on ubuntu too
but by default ubuntu use pulseaudio and alsa components are not always presents (depending of your installation)
that the problem you had.

But all that, is really well explained into the Airtime manual !
