vps crashing
  • hi all

the vps we use crashes most days - we have 4 sites with its own version of newscoop

My host emailed to say the following - any thoughts - we have tried caching as well now

    Hi Mark,

I've had a good look at your server over the last couple of days. I
don't believe it's anything specific that's causing the crashing, just
rather that the server is under a lot of CPU pressure. The good news is
that your memory is now ok, you don't need any more memory, but it is
struggling with CPU. I'd like to suggest perhaps you
can look at some code optimisation first. It's not easy for me to be
able to tell what is causing so much CPU, but from what i can see, it's
not even the fact that any website is busy, just the fact that loading a
page seems to require so much CPU power.

  • hi, do you have there some opcode cache like apc?
  • hi petr

sorry for delay in replying - my mac has blown with all my passwords etc

    anyway got this from isp

    Hi Mark,

I've just tried to install apc, however it appears cpanel does not support apc unfortunately. I don't think your server problems are coming from the database anyway - so it's unlikely it would have helped that much - i'm hoping the template handler cache will help.

    template handler cashe hasnt helped

its always the same time between 9.30am and 10am - there is around 4-5 people logging on at the time on 1 of the sites - each person puts 1 or 2 stories on and thats it - cant see why this would completely crash a system - any thoughts

  • hi, apc is not related to database, it's cache of php code so it's not compiled for every request. there is also xcache doing the same thing if that would work.

    btw any information in logs?
  • nothing in the logs, just the cpu usage rises to 100% - we have now installed xcache - will keep you informed
