No sound card
  • Hi,

i have a server (that has no soundcard) running icecast and airtime as a scheduled playlist station. Works great. Before diving into live broadcasts, i would like to know:
what are the limitations for airtime on a server without a soundcard?
can i stream live on such a server using a full-fledged laptop?

    thanks

    Ed

There arent any limitations to run Airtime without a soundcard. The
instructions for doing that are at the end of the install guide:

Airtime 1.6 doesnt support stream rebroadcasting, though it is a highly
requested feature and we are planning on adding it.

    Hi Ed,

    > can i stream live on such a server using a full-fledged laptop?

Do you mean that the laptop is running the streaming client, which
connects to Icecast on the Airtime server?

As Paul says, stream re-broadcasting hasn't been implemented yet, but in
the meantime, Icecast accepts multiple connections. So you could
configure one mountpoint for the live stream from your laptop, and
another mountpoint for the output of Airtime.

Then either manually switch over the mountpoints as you start/end your
live show, or use the fallback feature in Icecast to switch mountpoints
when the connection from your laptop drops.

As for CPU requirements, I have run the IDJC client
http://idjc.sourceforge.net/ on a 1GHz web tablet, so if your laptop is
five years old or less, it should do fine.

For an Airtime server I would recommend using a machine with RAID,
preferably with hot-swap, because any downtime could interrupt your
    broadcast output.

    Cheers!

    Daniel
