Is there a reason why in 3.5-alpha, the SMS field in the article editor
uses TinyMCE?
Surely a simple text field of 160 characters (or 70 characters for
Russian, Chinese and other 16-bit alphabets) would suffice, since any
formatting will be discarded in the conversion to SMS?

Hello,
Article (content) types are totally flexible, so you can make the SMS field
whichever field type you want. So it was just the sample template package
author who made the SMS field a body-type field.
We should fix that in the sample package.
All the best,
Sava
