[campsite-support] Using a remote/shared host?
  • I'm paying for hosting from a hosting company, and thus my access to their server is rather limited. I have looked at the sample sites using campsite though, and I am impressed. I've been wanting to put a publication on my website and campsite seems the program to use.

In the installation instructions though, it says I need root access. This is of cause something that I simply can't get. My host also refuses to install campsite for me, even for an additional fee. Is there a way for me to install campsite, or should I give up my hopes of it and find another script?

My control panel is cpanel and I have full FTP access to my account if that helps, probably not though.

  • I spend several days trying to make cpanel work with campsite and I
failed. I also noticed some people trying the same, but I never heard
    any success story.

    Sorry for bad news.

For newspaper that looks for campsite are only two basic ways to get
    online:
    1) Get your own server
    2) Get campsite rented from some hosting provider that has this service.

Also you can look at the campsite manual, there should be some "install
without root access" pasage, though I never went through it.

  • Here are the instructions for installing as a non-root user:
    http://code.campware.org/manuals/campsite/2.4/index.php?id=135

though you still need shell access to be able to do it.

Sorry about these limitations, but please note we have plans to make it
easier to install campsite in the future. There are many hosting
providers that provide shell access and/or root access, which are not
very expensive. If you would like some suggestions for companies,
please let us know. Also, we know people who will host campsite for you
    for a fee.

  • I installed campsite without root access on my own computer just to
check that it works. and it works. But shell access was required. And
all the dependencies had to be installed as root of course.

  • I have shell access at Bluehost and am trying to install Campsite on their servers.

I have followed the instructions in the manual for 'Installation without Root access' but get the following error:

    aviewfr1@aviewfromengland.com [~/campsite-install]# ./configure --apache_bin_path /usr/bin/ --campsite_dir /home/aviewfr1/campsite
    Checking install dependencies...OK

    OK

Does anyone have any ideas what the problem is and also how to solve it? If I can get it working then there will be at least one shared host that Campsite works on fully.

    Thanks in advance
