[livesupport-dev] LS HTML UI on mobile devices

    Hi,

    Akos and I have returned from the LiveSupport training session in
    Johannesburg with more than a few "reality checks." One of the things we
    noticed was the prevalence of mobile phones with GPRS and browsers, like
    the Nokia 9210.

    With one of the trainees (who owns a 9210), we took a look at the LS demo
    site. While the site opens up, much of the formatting isn't quite
    compatible with the 9210's browser; we couldn't pull down menus, for
    example, and the layout always puts the scratchpad to the bottom of a
    document.

    It may be worth coming up with a "simplified" HTML UI that would work on
    these devices. Ideally, the current HTML UI would sniff for browser type
    and automatically degrade to the simplified UI if the version is older or
    not recognized as being fully functional.

    I've posted a feature request as Ticket #1557.

    Does anyone on the list have a mobile device that has a browser? Would you
    be interested/able to provide us with testing/feedback?

    Sounds like a gimmick, I have some doubt that soembody would really use it
    on a cellar-phone.

    I am much more interested to make the htmlUI barrier-free. Mabee therefore
    we can even get some funding?

    While it might sound like a gimmick here in Europe, all over Africa there
    are functioning cellular networks (in South Africa there's 3G and GPRS),
    whereas broadband penetration lags far behind; in South Africa wifi was
    illegal until about a year ago thanks to a strange law that forbade radio
    signals to be broadcast across roadways without a license. At the same
    time, mobile penetration - and the buildup of networks to support them -
    is continuing at a rapid pace.

    Whether you think that's a gimmick or not is up to you. But I agree that
    accessibility issues can also be addressed in a simplified HTML UI.
