[livesupport-dev] talk vs voice
  • Hi all,

Do you agree with bug #1186?

    http://code.campware.org/projects/livesupport/ticket/1186

Before I make this change in the Studio client, too, I'd like to get a
second opinion. I think people would know what is meant by "talk", and
they would be puzzled by "voice".

  • Personally, I prefer 'Talk', but I don't feel strongly enough about it to
    argue hard against 'Voice'.

I think the rationale behind 'Voice' is that it's more neutral; 'Talk'
refers to a certain kind of program, whereas 'Voice' can be any kind of
spoken info, not just a 'Talk' show.

What is more important to me is that we get users to actually click on the
tab; I'm concerned that it's not appearing prominently enough to let
people know it's there, let alone input the relevant DCMIterms.

    But I still prefer talk...

  • I already changed to voice. But this is just localizer issue, everybody can
    switch to own preferences.
  • 'Voice' is general
and more neutral name  for audio files (or channels) that contain all
kind of clear 'human' sound signals.
In practice, if it is needed, we can determin more specific categories
and subcategories of the material, such as: talk, singing, speaking
    etc.
These names have more descriptive character.

In multi-channel radio production we give more general descriptions for
audio channel names, like: "voice channel, music channel, instrumental
    channel, video
channel, fx channel (ambient, atmosphere), master voice channel...",
and in audio signal  processing: voice channel processor, voice
    control, voice-over processor etc..

You can find something more about common expressions in descriptions of
dolby standard and 5.1 surround technologie.

Of course, we can certainly understand and use the expression 'talk',
but I wanted us to use the opposite word of the 'Music' tab, and that
    is 'Voice'.

I don't agree  that users will be puzzled with the word 'voice'- I
would rather see that we stick to the  usual and common standards. But,
anyway, people can change it in the localizer if they wish, to suit
their local image in radio station.

I would rather put the accent on the 'Main' tab, that considers me
right now. I think we should make it more stronger and more clearer in
functionality for users, because, basically, it should represent
everything other than 'Music' and 'Voice', such as radio commercials,
    jingles, etc..

  • I see Robert's point about voice, now I understand what he's talking
    about.

His remarks point to another thing that we're missing right now, which is
a level of classification for items like 'Ad', 'Jingle' 'Liner', 'Station
    ID', 'Promo' and the like.

Currently we only provide different icons for a sound file or a playlist.
But a person in the studio has to deal with lots of other items like ads,
jingles and the like. I'd like to see us come up with a better way of
    differentiating these files visually.

Robert, what would the complete list of those files include, besides 'Ad',
'Jingle' 'Liner', 'Station ID', and 'Promo'?

Charles, can you think of a way we can present these visually?

  • OK, I was just double-checking before making a (trivial but) highly
visible change. To me, "talk" is Alistair Cooke, and "voice" is Hayley
Westenra. But I see these words are used differently by radio people.

    Ferenc
  • Who's Hayley Westenra?

Pop-classical singer (think Andrea Bocelli, only younger, female, and
from New Zealand). It may be cheesy, but she has a great, er, voice.
