    I had a chat with the gstreamer guys, and the basic conclusion was that
    capability negotiation in gstreamer 0.8 is 'borked', and that 0.9 will
    fix the issue.

    meanwhile I patched the adder element in gst-plugins (this is our third
    patch for this element), so that a certain format can be enforced on it.

    so now opening SMIL files should be fast enough, but please see for
    yourself, and report your experiences...
