I put together an old box and installed the ls live cd knoppix on it.
After purging the old ls packages and adding the new ones, everything
started fine, but.
If I set any of the audio devices (scheduler, live mode, cue) to
plughw:0, /dev/dsp or /dev/dsp1, it works. (I only have 2 sound cards.)
If I set it to plughw:1 (or plughw:1,0, hw:1, hw:1,0), there is no
sound, although xmms works with device=hw:1,0. This is very strange indeed.
Does anybody have any suggestions how this is possible?

Is there a deference in the settings for the first or the second card?
dmix on the first and second yes-no-set
bid-rate on the first and second 48000 vs 44100
