[livesupport-dev] version 1.0 technicalities
  • dear dev list,

since the 1.0 release is happening this week, we took the last weekend to
run through the software components to find the best version 1.0 possible.

the most striking decision we took was going for helix instead of
gstreamer, even though gstreamer will be the route to go from version 1.0
    onwards.

but looking at the current functionality, helix is the better choice for a
    release, given two limitations:

    a) helix does only play MP3 files at this stage. OGG Vorbis will be fully
supported with gstreamer in the future. however, most radio stations we had
contact with are working with MP3 files today. for licensing reasons we
want to encourage the use of ogg vorbis files in the future, but delivering
a working livesupport system this week, mp3 seems to be covering today's needs.

    b) helix can only work stable when playing audio over one sound card. it is
not capable of handling two sound cards. this means that in the radio
studio the scheduler running on LS Station will be a separate server, as
suggested from the developers anyway. the main feature blocker is the lack
of the cue or preview function for the live station in LS Studio, i.e. the
machine inside the studio, running the C++ application part of LiveSupport.

all these issues will of course be described in detail in the version 1.0
    manual.

    all the best,

  • Sorry but with a) and b) in mind i am not happy with this, i think we've
got the go for the better/higher quality, and put all the effort to the
gstreamer environment, rather then spending any energy and time to helix
and the related work, even if this got to take 3 extra weeks.

we do not have three extra weeks for version 1.0 it must happen this week.

from the developers point of view, sure, the helix issue is an issue.

but there is more to the project then the continuous improvement of the
livesupport software - which is of course the ambition of the developers.

there is also an issue of project partners and time tables and finishing
development cycles. and we have to finish 1.0 this week.
