[livesupport-dev] experimental debian builds up

    Hi all,

In an effort to allow others (especially Robert Klajn) access to a newer
version of LiveSupport for testing and documentation, I've made a new
build of the LiveSupport Debian packages.

THIS IS NOT THE RC1 RELEASE. This is a completely unofficial and highly
experimental release. The 'real' release will come with 1.0 RC1 in the
next couple of days. It's simply a snapshot of the CVS from today and
    turned into installable Debian packages.

Because these are not part of anything official, the packages are up on my
    personal web server, at:

    http://www.arellanes.com/livesupport/deb/livesupport-libs_0.9.9a-1_i386.deb
    http://www.arellanes.com/livesupport/deb/livesupport-station_0.9.9a-1_i386.deb
    http://www.arellanes.com/livesupport/deb/livesupport-studio_0.9.9a-1_i386.deb

Download the files to a local directory, then install them with:

    dpkg -i livesupport-libs_0.9.9a-1_i386.deb
    dpkg -i livesupport-station_0.9.9a-1_i386.deb
    dpkg -i livesupport-studio_0.9.9a-1_i386.deb

If you're running a previous version of a Debian package, like the one on
the Demo/Install CD, it will automatically upgrade to the newest one.

    Happy downloading!

What did you base the CD on?

If I make a Gentoo LiveCD with LiveSupport would that be OK?

    Hi Stefan,

Our LiveCD is based on Knoppix, but I'd be happy to see LiveCDs based on
other platforms. The main thing is to make sure you get the installer
program and its dependencies. Michael Aschauer can tell you more about it.

The tricky (or trickiest) question on any LiveCD is ensuring the widest
possible hardware detection and support; if a Gentoo CD can deliver
something good, then I'm especially for it.

I'm assuming this would build on your offer to make the Gentoo eBuilds for
    LiveSupport? Are those ready somewhere?

Exactly catalyst shouldn't make it too hard to do, but I do want to have
some experience with the different flavors of Livesupport applications.
    Also NLS support before boot.

They are still prealpha, currently I'm at the database base

One thing you should probably be aware of is that we're trying to include
a populated database for the LiveCD that would include both Creative
Commons-licensed content and playlists, so that users can really use the
system in demo mode. The other thing is to make sure the install program
works on your LiveCD as well.

Michael Aschauer may not be responding, as I understand he's currently
traveling, but he should be back in the next couple of weeks.

We've given some sample files to Tomas Hlava, who should be able to give

I still want to investigate if it is possible to replace PostgreSQL with
SQLite at least for the Live CD, cds run without swap and if everything
    needs to run *be prepared*.

I have a copy - it's ~27MB tar (bad compression ratio when bzipped)
it's possible to upload it somewhere.

It will be available in Livesupport backup format on CVS in
    a very near future.

    Hi Michael,

You can also do as I did, and pull down the files from the CVS, then
follow the steps outlined in this document:

    http://livesupport.campware.org/public_html/doc/release.html

It's pretty easy, actually. The one thing that isn't documented there is
that you must change the information in the /etc/debian/changelog file to
reflect the updated version number; in my case it was 0.9.9a.

As I don't have access to my Ubuntu box right now (I'm in the process of
traveling to California), I won't be able to do much more until later.

Ah - I hadn't seen that page - looks like it has the instructions I

    need.

  • I'm testing the livesupport deb packages that Michael Schultheiss made
on a debian unstable box. This is as far as i get after manually
resolving a lot of the dependencies but I'm probably missing some other
dependency that keeps it from connecting to postgres... is there a list
of required libs and other packages? I'm also wondering what's going on
    with this line:

    cat: /opt/livesupport/usr/storageAdmin/bin/php/conf.php.template: No

wow, great that Michael has made some packages! where can you download
    them from?

    yes, there is: http://livesupport.campware.org/public_html/doc/install.html

as for the connection issue with postgres, see the Database section in
    the above document...

    seems strange enough..

can you contact Michael if these required files are indeed in the
    packages he built?

hmm.... i dunno... seems like everything should be working fine... the
database and user exists as created by the livesupport installer, all
the odbc packages are installed. i can't imagine what else could be
wrong unless something crucial lies within these missing files.

Me being home or away doesn't affect my ability to check e-mail
(although I won't have time to work on the packages until I get home).
I built them following the instructions at
    http://livesupport.campware.org/public_html/doc/release.html

FWIW, my build log is available at:

    http://dev.amellus.net/livesupport/build.log

No, it's from whenever I built the packages last (a week or two ago
    iirc)
