[livesupport-dev] ready for deployment? and auto-generating playlists?
  • Hi,

[this posting belongs maybe more to the support list than to the devel
list, but support seems to be a newborn baby without members]

I was very happy to learn about LiveSupport, when looking for radio
    software on Freshmeat.

I am looking for software to help an intercultural flemish (.be) site
    setup an internet radio station.
In the beginning, volunteers will produce about an hour of interviews
and reports every week. The rest of the week will be filled with music
    and dj-sets.

So I am looking for software to do broadcast automation. Make schedules
based on genre, year, least played, random selection, that kind of
metadata. Preferably open-source on linux. One affordable but quite
complex (for end users) commercial alternative is SAM Broadcaster. I
would hate to use this, because of its dependency on Windows and not
    being OSS.

Could livesupport do the mentioned scheduling and auto-generating of
    playlists already?

Is the just released version 0.9 ready for deployment, or should I
    consider it a technology preview?

I hope to hear from you soon.

    Best,
    Gerbrand

    Hi Gerbrand,

Thanks for the questions about LiveSupport's status. I'll try to answer
them as best I can, and if others have something they'd like to add, I'm
sure they'll post to this list too.

The 0.9 release of LiveSupport - the one that is out now - does not
currently support the generation of random playlists. The current 0.9
release supports the creation and scheduling of playlists "by hand" only.

I've met with developer Tomas Hlava at length about this topic - and about
a related one, which is to support repeating playlist items (over at
http://bugs.campware.org see feature requests 544 and 563 for details -
    http://bugs.campware.org/view.php?id=544 and
http://bugs.campware.org/view.php?id=563 respectively) - and he is working
on an RFC document now describing how he plans to implement the features
    technically.

I hope to get an estimate from him on when we can see the feature in
action shortly. I'm not sure whether it will make it into the 0.91 release
    - which is supposed to be either this week or next - or in the 1.0
release, which should be in May. Keep watching this list for his
    communications on the topic.

While the 0.9 release is pretty stable, I think the 0.91 release should
address a lot of bugs that have been reported and is the one I'd feel
better about using in a broadcast environment. The 1.0 version should be
    even better in this respect.

There are three major components in the LiveSupport 1.x cycle: Station,
    Studio and Network.

0.9 was the release of Station, the backend that powers the entire system.
It includes the StorageServer, Scheduler daemon, Authentication Library,
    and web and XML-RPC interfaces.

The 1.0 release will also include LiveSupport Studio, which is a
Linux-based client program that allows studio employees to control station
content in 'Live mode', as opposed to pre-made playlists. We expect to
have a 'serious technology preview' of LiveSupport Studio at the end of
the first week of May, with a user-tested and documented version sometime
    after.

The 1.1 release will include the third major LiveSupport component,
LiveSupport Network, which enables stations using LiveSupport to share
program content via the Internet, either on a limited basis with other
stations or on a public basis (including podcasts) via a portal.

While we don't currently have a Flemish localization for LiveSupport (we
are planning to include, as part of the 0.91 release, full localizations
of LiveSupport Station in English, Spanish, Czech, Hungarian, Serbian and
Dutch), we would be thrilled to have you or a member of your team help
    with this as well.

Please feel free to contact me either directly or through the list with
any other questions you may have.

    Best regards,

    douglas
