Hi,
This is mainly a question for Robert Klajn, but others can feel free to
comment as well.
Frans van Berckel is trying to create a MiniDisc import mechanism for
LiveSupport, and in the process of doing so we've got a couple of
questions about usage scenarios.
One big question is the amount of content on MD anymore. Does B92 use MDs,
and if so, how much content is on them? Are we talking about 10 MDs worth
of content? Hundreds of MDs?
Before Frans spends more time trying to crack Sony's proprietary
mechanisms, I'm wondering if it would be easier to just take the digital
output from an MD and dump its content to a sound editing program like
Audacity, as a big .WAV (or whatever) file. Then a user would have to
copy/paste the individual jingles into individual files, and then import
those into LiveSupport.
At the same time, Tomas Hlava is working on a group import method that
will allow us - if all goes well - to take all 30,000 songs in the B92
library and import them into LS - provided you've got a big enough hard
disc
What do you think?

Yes, our journalists use them, but we are
not very
happy and satisfied with this technology, because we have big fear from
that famous "click" if any lack of attention occurs during it's use
(and that means that all the disks content is gone for good!!). I don't
know what to say about this "unfinished" technology - personally-
maybe NetMD is going to be better I
can't wait for HD recorders to improve. But, in despite of all these
risks, we still use MDs for interviews (almost 80%), some little HD or
chip recorders and some classic analog casette recorders.
MD can save up to 70 min stereo or 140 min
of mono material (on 99 track positions).
Because of the auto-erase risk, we don't
save any
valuable recording on MD longer than a few days. We transfer all the
important recordings immediately in computers - by "catching on the
fly" system, through the live LINE-IN entrance and re-recording in
Sound Forge.
Are we talking about 10 MDs
worth of content? Hundreds of MDs
In B92 we are talking about the content
of about
50 MDs (2-3 MDs per journalist - reporter for the voice interview
recordings).
We don't keep music on that technology. We
keep it on CD and DVD ROMs in Mp3 format.
MD media is very expensive for us as the
backup
space for only 70 min of music, and we are less fond of ATRAC
compression than of 256 Mp3 or Ogg compression on some big HD. Also,
music and voice are also inpractical and too big for audio editing.

If Frans manages to break Sony protection
system
and provide automatic copying from MD to HD together with the tracks,
we will have great professional add-on, and I personally want his
autograph on my new Camp shirt )) .
I dream about the time when the
journalist will simply come into the office, put MD player into the
player device and transfer all the track positions together with
the audio recordings to PC. .......
Of course, we can always catch "on the fly"
live
input and record in the Audacity, if it is necessary, and we need this
also if we are recording phono - interview (telephone recording) in
radio station.

p.s. 30.000 songs x 6 (
aprox 6 Mb per song ) = 180 Gb . Maybe thats not to much for serious
server )))
best ,
Robert

Yes,
I have Win Creative MiniDisc center.Works very good in transfer but
still slow. ESDL has much better results ( transfers 74 min in 15min ).
Sony and others think about PC and MAC, but very often forget Linux users.
Here are my results for linux transfer MD - PC. Maybe you have allready
seen that?

Thanks Robert, but I have read these pages, with 400 other the past 6 weeks.
I think that everbody has a wrong start point. That's what the guy from
ESDL are talking about.
" The unit is a custom model with advanced
characteristics not found USB model or NetMD "
So no digital audio or usb interface, that delete files if you only want a
copy on disc, but a SCSI. MD Data drives are mountable and my new start
point. Normal spoken these are not for audio discs, i have to find a
solution for.
I go search for the Minidisc SCSI Data drives ones. Can not find on ebay !
" MDH-10 " " MDM111 " " MDM110 "
I have found out that the sony memory stick got ATRAC3 file access for
audio and there are divice drivers for the MDH-10 (old) for linux.
