My own preference would be to have the DJ bag snap along the side. Either
side is fine with me.

I'd love to see something like this in there, but am not sure how it'd be
handled. Would it be based on user login, so that a DJ comes into the
studio and sees another DJ's open DJ bag if the first one forgot to log
out?

Another note about the 'DJ case' function in other programs: some have
file handling built into that window, and some even have a small player
with three or four buttons (play/pause, fast forward, rewind) for
previewing a file before adding it.

one thing we did come up with though is a feature that doug mentioned
being
part of another piece of software, the DJ bag.

this is like a clip board which can hold files and playlists. anywhere you

do something to a file or a playlist, you can add it to the DJ bag. from
the DJ bag you can then select one or more items to go somewhere else.

an example:

i add a file by uploading it to the storage. it automatically comes up in
the DJ bag. from there i can right mouse click of select for 'add item to
exising playlist'

another example:

i searched the archive for my 'r&b night hour' programme, searched for all

items with 'guitar' and 'tears' in the title. from the found items, i
select 5 with a check box and say 'add to DJ bag' before continuing my
search to add some gary moore. later i will select 25 items from the DJ
bag
and say 'create new playlist with selected items'.

so the DJ bag really is like a clipboard - and saves a lot of trouble of
going back and forth between feautres, e.g. uploading gary moore and
adding
to the DJ bag AND searching for items to add to the DJ bag will gve me a
list of files that goes straight into my new playlist.

the DJ bag will be right mouse click sensitive and ofer a set of features
for files and playlists which will be the same for files and playlists
anywhere in the system.

so... it is pretty late to add a new feature to the software package,
which
is why we want to keep it simple. an icon tells us if it is a file or a
playlist and it will only display the title, because the DJ bag is like
our
working memory. it is there, in our mind, in the bag. short term memory.

the main problem to the interface design will be: if we decide to use the
DJ bag, this also means that the DJ bag should become almost the core
crossroads to many operations, i.e. needs to be quite prominent and
potentially *always* available. so... where do we attach this baby to...
the main window, running across the top? then we have a L shape, lying on
the side...

Hi Micz, Akos & Doug,

Long time no "see" about some new ideas of simplifying radio station's
work. Currently I am supervising our new software's design; so far I
have learned it by heart, and I am very interested in finding out who
"Diego-Diego" is Smile

. That is my No1 hit for the year 2004, and I would
like to record it for my car. Smile

I am not suprised that Doug suggested something called DJ bag,
especially because that is a good idea in case you want to prepare
music for your set that is going on air in 2 hours (for example),
depending on your mood. Otherwise, I don't quite like the idea of
direct item's transferring from our huge and heavy file storage right
into the sensitive and fragile playlist. Somehow that seems rough and
excludes fine tuning of playlists. I had something similar in mind,
too, like you guys, but I didn't want to overload this first version
of our software with this, because I think I already "wished" too
complex machinery, that is for me and my job, something like microsoft
outlook for the writers or autocad for engineers.

If it is relatively simple for programmers to insert the option "add to
DJ bag"- I am totaly for that! For me, DJ bag is something like
temporarily dir. , clipboard, or some kind of shortcut to the
storaged item.

If you ask me, the general search function is one thing and it
represents an enormous search tool. Maybe a button on the side or the
right mouse click should be enough to put the item either on the end
of the playlist, or into the DJ bag (optionally, depends of the event
that user wants to make). When you exit from the search engine, you go
then to the playlist and sort the items by the order of broadcasting.
Or, to be more precise, you open the DJ bag, check once more on the
material we want to use, and from there we insert the items on the
playlist. It would be good that we keep the existing L shape of the
Master and Live Mode palette, and on the rest of the screen, we can have
tools that can change depending of the user's choice, like: 1. search
engine, 2. DJ bag, 3. Cue palette.... Also, I was thinking of
positioning "add to DJ bag" option into the lower part of the screen and
not in the Master palette because I think that the Master palette should
have a "exporting" and not the " importing" function.

here, there's little transfer taking place, we're just having a list of
files. all the files remain in the storage itself.

also, the bag not only lists files, but playlists as well.

yes, this is what we were thinkig about...

yes, this was the point - you can get into the search window from so
many different contexts. one could be when you try to add entries into a
playlist, then when you want to edit contest of entires, etc. etc.

but the DJ bag, the program would not have to remember this context -
and it also woulnd't make the mistake of identifying the context wrong.
(keep in mind, that while "what I want to do" is an easy concept for the
user, it's very difficult for a program to comprehend).

yes, this is what we were thingking about. and you'd have your last
opened / edited playlist in the bag, so you could get back into editing
the playlist very easily - just by selecting it.
