[campsite-dev] SMS Story/Comment Submission
  • Erik is working on a SMS system that will allow you to submit stories
(and later comments) via SMS. We could also make it send out stories
and any number of other crazy things. But the particular features arent
    what this email is about.

In order to set up such a system, you need a GSM modem and some software
called Kannel (open source). The cost for the modem is about $180. The
setup process would take 1-2 days of work which includes recompiling the
Linux kernel, so you will most likely need another computer as well.

The question is, would you (the users of campsite) rather subscribe to
such a service for a fee (outsource), or would you rather set it up
    yourself in-house?

  • As Campsite users in the middle east region (which heavily relay on all kind
of SMS services) we would setup such a system in house. The only problem is
that we have never done something like this before and we don't know how
complex such a setup will be. There is also a question of legality of such a
system because there are service taxes on SMS providers in this region of
the world. For the above reasons, if we decided to use such a system we
would choose to subscribe to an outsource service for few months to test out
the system and ensure there are no legal issues with it, then we would
    probably setup the system in-house.

btw is such a system connected somehow to campsite or is it a stand alone.
It would be an invaluable add-on to campsite to broadcast breaking news for
    example!

  • It would be integrated with Campsite, not stand-alone.

As far as setting up in-house, we would provide instructions, and we
estimate it would take 1-2 days to do.

If you find out anything about the tax system, please let us know.
