    Hi=20
Im reposting this email as I think everyone at MDLF may have been out of=20
    the=20
office from May Day till now and my first mail may have been lost in the=20
    post?

    To whom it may concern.
Im writing from the Namibian Newspaper, a daily national newspaper based=20
    in
Windhoek Namibia. I met Douglas Arellanes=A0about a year ago at an IT=20
    'summit'
called Highway Africa, in Grahamstown, South Africa. He introduced a group =

    of
us to some of the issues around opensource software particularly 'total=20
    cost'
etc. He also showed us the Campware CMS, Campsite.
I tried to do an install later that year, but perhaps because of lack of=20
    time
and persistence wasn't able to get the CMS running on Red Hat. I recently
tried a new version (2.18) on Mandrake and with the prompting of Mugur Rus
was able to get a clean install running. I have experimented with the
template files available from the site and read through the online
    documentation.
I have (in a rather spartan way) got it to emulate the 'look and feel' of=20
    our
    current website.
However I cant get the full functionality of our current CMS ( a fast-CGI
plug-in for the macintosh Webstar server called Netcloak from Maxum Dev.)
which allows our daily upload of the Namibian Newspaper Online
    (www.namibian.com.na).

This CMS is fairly straightforward, but now only runs on the deprecated OS =

    9
platform, or at least requires a big upgrade to OSX Server and a new
deployment tool called Iassist. I guess we could call this 'vendor-lock=20
    in'
as any move to another platform is very difficult unless i can make the=20
    old
content static (and OS9 illegal filenames make this quite difficult)

To get to my point, are their any 2nd Party developers with the campware
team, who could perhaps look at what our site does (its a mix of News=20
    Front
End and 'webcrossing' Forum Software) from its front End functionality and
design us a site which allows more graphical content and 'look and feel'
flexibility, while still allowing what the current frontpage and other
    newspages do?
The frontpage allows us to put Op-ed, a quote, a 'word a day', a large
headline and various smaller headlines. Other sections allow letters=20
    (which
are archived, but expire as links after 72 hours), news, oshiwambo (the=20
    main
    language here), market, international etc.

I may need to refine my request in another email, but what Im asking is=20
    what
the cost would be for a Campsite customisation to suit the current=20
    Namibian
Online sites existing functionality/navigation, while allowing more varied
changes to its look and feel, especially using campfire to place graphics.
I feel sure that any of the team looking at the Namibian will have a bit=20
    of a
laugh at the number of nested tables and the use of frames (all of which=20
    we'd
like to drop), but we found diverging from the designers original template =

    in
a production environment produced some very strange effects per different
browser and we arent trying to modify it rather to replace it entirely.

    Could the campware team advise?

On another point....we produce an issue each day. Would the publishing
mechanism for Campsite oblige us to scroll down many pages if after say=20
    2-3
years of issues, or is their a way that issues are backgrounded via
    customisation of the /priv loader.

Hope Im making sense as Im once again in a round of print deadlines, and
hence not as focused as i could be.
Thanks for your time and hope to hear from anyone at MDLF/ Campware who=20
    could
recommend a solution to our CMS issue.

  • Hi Raed,

You are welcome to take this job (at least from my point of view). Anyway,
whoever takes this job, please consult the Campsite feature list on
http://bugs.campware.org - chose Campsite. Please consult with Campsite
developers on new features in order not to split the source code tree and to
create patches that are hard to maintain. We'll be glad to include any new
    feature in Campsite.

    Regards,
    Mugur
