Try the strip_tags modifier from Smarty:
http://www.smarty.net/manual/en/language.modifier.strip.tags.php

This will remove all HTML tags from the text.

Or if you wanted to be more precise and remove only the image link use the
regex_replace modifier:
http://www.smarty.net/manual/en/language.modifier.regex.replace.php
