Articles 'locked' when they shouldn't be

I'm the administrator of a system in which students are posting articles (as authors). Looking at the 'submitted articles' and 'pending articles' lists, there are several articles marked as 'locked' which I don't think should be - the last edit was some hours ago. What could be happening? Is it because students are not exiting the editor correctly? I should also say that two students are acting as 'editors' to control publishing of articles - could they be doing something wrong?
