Hello All,
i am having and issue with images in newscoop 3.5.3 on Debian Squeeze.

I upload an image in the admin and everything is fine but as soon as the image is displayed in an article there are visible artefacts due to jpg compression and the image is visibly darker.

In the Image Archive in the Admin the image looks great, like this one:

And here is the very same image (Id 27) how it is displayed in an article:
http://magazine.other-reality.org/get_img?ImageWidth=640& ;amp ;ImageId=27

How can i set the image compression percentage in newscoop?

hi,

this happened due image size changing (doesn't matter that size is same to original).
Check this: http://magazine.other-reality.org/get_img?ImageId=24

I'm not sure is it fixed in 3.6 beta. Of course, the same image to original should be shown as is. I'll make a ticket for this.

yes, this seems to be an issue in the campside code and i would prefere not to wait for 3.6 to have good quality thumbnails in my magazine!
I found something in the Changelog for 3.3.3 that says "- #2976 - Thumbnails generated from article images are very low-quality" but its supposed to be fixed. Yet if i look at other sites that use newscoop (like fluter.de) it seems its the same there - the thumbnails all seem to have artefacts.

Can someone point me to the part of the code where i can change that?

That particular bug was fixed, but this could be another one. Have you tried
reproducing it on the demo server?

i tried now to reproduce it on the demo server and it appears to be exactly the same issue:
Here is the original image http://newscoop-demo.sourcefabric.org/images/cms-image-00000 0009.jpg

As i said, i also found this issue in other sites using newscoop - like fluter.de:

compressed version: http://film.fluter.de/get_img?ImageWidth=430&ImageId=000 030009

I guess most of the time it's is not really visible as it seems to be very little compression, but if you use high quality images from the start this can be quite annoying. Im amazed that nobody ever brought this up.

Hi,

I took a look at this issue and by doing that I found a couple things
that I fixed.

1- Newscoop was resizing images even though the given new dimensions
were exactly the same as the original image, which doesn't make sense.
2- Image quality for jpeg images was by default 75 percent. It was
increased now to 100.

However, from those links you provided I couldn't see any difference
between the images in the newscoop-demo server, maybe I was distracted
by the girl's legs that I missed the photographic details ;-).

I found though the problem with the images from fluter, but be aware
fluter uses an old version of Newscoop (Campsite at that time).

I will commit the changes and those will be available in the next
release. If you need them before I can send you a patch file.

thank you for pointing me there, but unfortunately i am unable to find the place in the code where to change the jpeg compression setting from 75 to 100, as described in Holman Morris' last post above. I still don't know how to make this change in the code.

you should change $function($t) to $function($t, null, 100)
and $function($t, $p_target) to $function($t, $p_target, 100)

It works! I also deleted any images in images/image_cache/ and cleared the system cache in the admin and now i have crisp images everywhere!

thank you. now where to find the image compression setting. so that this image will look great in an article.
any advice on this forum.
