php assigning smarty variables problem

hello , any one knows if this works in campsite 3.3.3?

{{php}}
$this->assign('var','value');
{{/php}}

or

{{php}}
$template->assign('var','value');
{{/php}}

none of them seem to work

Have You tried $smarty->assign()?
