In newscoop 3.x code below worked well but not in 4.0

{{php}}

$this->assign('firstname', 'Doug');

{{/php}}

And another question: how to make newscoop print errors?
I tried this in index.php but nothing happened:

ini_set('display_errors', 1);

error_reporting(E_ALL);

and then later in template you can access it simply by

btw. newscoop 4.0 has smarty3 so it would be getTemplateVars not get_template_vars
